Questions to ask a Contractor

Before getting into the fine details of your roofing project, the first step is to get to know your contractor.

  • What is your full company name, phone number, and physical address?

Opt for a local company for better accountability. If issues arise, you want to know when assistance is available. If the roofer lists only a P.O. Box, request the physical address. If they can't provide one, it’s best to consider other options.

  • How long has your roofing company been in business?

A company with over 10 years of experience likely has a track record of delivering quality work and building strong customer relationships.

  • Can you provide references?

A reputable contractor should readily offer references from past clients. Additionally, ask for local job sites to see their work firsthand.

  • Does your company have general liability insurance?

Does your company have general liability insurance?

  • Will you remove my old roof?

While it might seem cost-effective to install a new roof over the existing one, this could lead to expensive repairs later. Removing old shingles allows for inspection of the underlying deck, which may be soft or rotting.

  • What is your procedure for inclement weather?

Inquire about the plan for delays due to rain. The contractor should ensure the site is secured and dry during adverse weather conditions.

  • Will you provide a detailed written estimate for the project?

Request a comprehensive estimate that includes the costs of removing the old roof, installing the new roof, replacing damaged structures, materials, and any potential additional expenses.

  • What is the cost per sheet for replacing damaged plywood?

Ask the contractor for the cost of plywood sheets in case your roof deck needs repairs.

  • Will you install drip edge or edge material with the new roof?

Confirm whether drip edge will be included, as it’s crucial for preventing long-term water damage.

  • How long will the project take?

Check if the contractor will be starting other jobs before completing yours. A contractor focused solely on your project is preferable.

  • Will there be an on-site contact for me?

It's important to have a representative on-site who can address your questions and manage any issues that may arise.

  • Can you provide the manufacturer’s warranty?

Request a copy of the manufacturer’s warranty to understand your rights in case a defective product is used.
